What is Digital Eye Strain

Despite what the name might suggest, your digital device itself doesn’t actually cause digital eye strain. Digital eye strain occurs when your eyes need to focus close-up for a long time. When you’re focusing on a task, your eyes also typically blink less, leaving them dry and irritated.

Symptoms of digital eye strain may include:

  • Soreness
  • Headaches
  • Dryness
  • Light sensitivity
  • Blurry or double vision
  • Overly watery or teary eyes
  • Difficulty focusing

A refractive error could exacerbate your digital eye strain, be it myopia, presbyopia, or astigmatism. You may also experience more pronounced symptoms if you are working in an area with poor lighting.

What Can We Do to Help?

You need your eyes to feel great no matter what you do, but experiencing digital eye strain can knock you out of your workflow and keep you from enjoying the things you love. Thankfully, there are a few things we can recommend to help make your vision feel great again:

  • Using medicated eye drops. Eye drops or artificial tears can help provide the lubrication your eyes need to feel comfortable.
  • Following the 20/20/20 rule. This exercise is incredibly easy, and you can perform at home or at the office. Every 20 minutes, shift your focus to an object about 20 feet away for about 20 seconds. This gives your eyes a quick break so you can get back to focusing on your work.
  • Improving your office ergonomics. Did you know that the way you sit can have an impact on the comfort of your eyes? By adjusting the flow of your workstation, you can ease the tension that close-up work can put on your eyes.

Ease Your Eye Strain Today

No matter what we do, there is always a possibility that you might start to experience some form of eye strain. For answers on how to mitigate your symptoms, and for expert help finding the source of your eye strain, don’t hesitate to book an eye appointment with us!
